Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Winona State University is a comprehensive public university that was established in 1858. It is the oldest member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System. It comprises of the five colleges of Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Health Sciences and Science and Engineering. It operates from its three campuses and offers more than 80 programs in a variety of subjects. It has a student faculty ratio of 21/1 and faculty members are highly trained, dedicated professionals who are experts in their respective fields. Faculty members of the paralegal department are practicing attorneys and judges.

Winona State University offers a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Paralegal Studies that has been approved by the ABA. The program is taken up by students who desire to gain entry into the legal profession as well as by students who want to prepare for law school.

Students are trained in such a way that they may function confidently in a legal office under the supervision of a lawyer. They are trained to understand American law as well as the professional and ethical responsibilities of paralegals. They are also trained to identify the various sources of research, conduct research, analyze the information gathered with relevance to the case they are working on and to draft documents etc. A 10 week internship is also necessary which helps students gain practical experience and gives them an idea of the functioning of a law office.
